Annular Cooler
Replacement
for
Metso

JMPancher Consulting was hired by the OEM to create a replacement cooler that would fit within an existing envelope and incorporate upgrades to enhance operation and improve maintenance and uptime. The existing cooler was designed in the 1960’s and only scans of the original hand drawings were available. A 3D model was created and 2D design drawings were generated from the model. Using scans of original board drawings, our engineers created a 3D model of much of the existing cooler and surrounding structural steel and ductwork.

THE PROBLEM

CREATE A REPLACEMENT COOLER

USING 60 YEAR OLD HAND DRAWINGS

JMPancher Consulting was hired by the OEM to create a replacement cooler that would fit within an existing envelope.  The desire was to improve on the legacy design so that the components lasted longer, were easier to maintain and to decrease air leakage.  Part of our team's task for the redesign was to also incorporate upgrades that would enhance operation and improve maintenance and uptime.

Part of our challenge in this redesign was that the existing cooler was designed in the 1960’s.  The only access we had to the legacy designs were scans of the original hand drawings.   To begin our process and to optimize our results, our team created a 3D model of the machinery and then we were able to generate 2D design drawings from that model.

Using those scans of original board drawings, our engineers created a 3D model of much of the existing cooler and surrounding structural steel and ductwork.

PROCESS: USING THE MODEL

This model would serve as the boundaries for the new rotating frame, seals and associated drive components that would be the heart of this retrofit.

Several trips were made to site to confirm available space and to also adequately plan for the removal and replacement of the components. Several large items had to be made in multi-piece sections to permit installation into the existing plant.

SOLUTIONS

NEW DESIGN and MODERNIZATION

Along with the new designs, changes were made to materials to bring them up to modern standards or to improve on the performance of the original selections, quality and inspection related documentation was generated and JMPancher Consulting worked with the OEM and their suppliers to price out the project and create an overall demolition and installation schedule.
